ABUJA – Supreme Court FC of Abuja on Sunday defeated Spotlight FC of Katsina 1 -0 in a Week 25 match of the Nigeria National League (NNL) to keep their hopes of promotion alive.
The match, played at the Old Parade Ground Sports Complex, Abuja, saw Owoicho Edoka scoring the only goal of the game for the hosts in the 17th minute.
Spotlight FC had more ball possession and were in control of the game for a better part of the encounter.
The Shema boys from Katsina, however, lacked the needed zest in the final third as the hosts’ defence kept them at bay.
Supreme Court FC kept a tight defensive line throughout the encounter and always looked to catch their opponents on the counter attack.
The hosts’ tactics paid off in the early minutes of the first half when Eric Dugha collected a loosed ball in the opponents’ half and quickly delivered a dangerous cross into Spotlight’s FC vital area.
The well taken cross found Supreme FC’s Captain, Edoka who stabbed home from inside the box to give the host the much needed victory.[eap_ad_2]
Coach Henry Haggai of Supreme Court FC expressed joy at the result, adding that it had given his side a renewed vigour to push for promotion.
“I am happy that my team was able to pick up these vital three points at home today (Sunday).
“All we need to do now is make sure we win at least four out of our remaining five matches before the end of the league season.
“We are hopeful that it would be enough to see us gain promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) next season.’’
Coach Bashir Sadoaki of Spotlight FC on his part blamed his team’s loss on poor officiating, noting that the goal scored by the host was illegitimate and should not have been allowed to stand.
“Our opponents were very aggressive but I think we were tactically the better team.
“The referee’s decision did little to help our cause today.
“We will get back to the drawing board and make sure we give a better performance at home on next weekend when TEAP FC of Abuja come visiting,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Spotlight FC is on the 7th position with 36 points, while Supreme Court FC currently occupies the 9th position on the 16 team NNL table with 35 points.
Table toppers, Wikki Tourist are on 44 points, while Prisons FC occupies the last position with 19 points.
Supreme Court FC will next lock horns with Prison FC, another Abuja-based team in a derby on Aug. 30. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
