ABUJA – The Nigeria National League (NNL) on Wednesday in Abuja said it had suspended till further notice the team captain and secretary of Spotlight Football Club of Katsina.
NNL Secretary, Lawrence Katken, who announced this further said the league organising body had also imposed a fine of N200,000 on the club in the first instance.
He said the action was part of NNL’s determination to discourage attacks on match officials.
“The action was based on Article 6.0 (1) of the Rules and Regulations of the competition which the club had breached by the deliberate attack on the match officials during its home match against Supreme Court FC in Katsina.
“According to the report of the said match submitted to NNL, it was stated that Spotlight FC’s team captain, Abdullahi Juli, Club Secretary Musa Abubakar and three others at large were involved in inflicting bodily injuries on the officials for reasons best known to them.
“For this act of hooliganism, both Juli and Abubakar have been handed an indefinite suspension while Spotlight FC will pay the sum of N200,000 only as fine.
“This fine must be paid within 14 days, or the club risks a severe penalty,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Spotlight FC had lost the match 2-3.
Katken said further that the club’s management has also been asked to make public the identities of the other three people who participated in the molestation of the match officials.
“If they fail to do this, they risk further sanctions as the NNL will deem fit,’’ he said.

The league secretariat head also said the Katsina State Football Association has also been warned to do the needful by ensuring the provision of adequate security before, during and after matches.
“This will help to safeguard the lives and property of all concerned parties in every game,’’ he said.
Katken however reminded the club, the player and official involved that the sanctions were interim measures pending their ratification by the Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).(NAN)
