The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial district, for alleged anti-party activities and his association with Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Alongside Senator Kawu, three other party members—Ali Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum—were also suspended. The NNPP leadership in Kano State announced the decision on Sunday.
During a press conference in Kano, Hashimu Dungurawa, the chairman of the NNPP’s Kano State chapter, stated that the suspended members were penalized for acting against the party’s values.
“These individuals were elected into the National Assembly under the NNPP platform, yet they have chosen to betray the trust placed in them by the party,” Dungurawa said. “Their actions contradict the principles and tenets of our party, and as such, we are left with no choice but to take disciplinary action.”
He particularly criticized Senator Kawu for alleged disloyalty, noting that the NNPP had supported him and the others with free tickets during the last elections. Dungurawa expressed disappointment that despite this support, they had maintained close ties with members of the opposition.
“What is even more shocking is that key members of the APC were invited to Senator Kawu’s daughter’s wedding, as well as the commissioning of some of his projects in Sumaila Local Government Area. This is a clear indication of where his loyalty lies,” Dungurawa added.
Despite the disciplinary action, the NNPP chairman indicated that the party might reconsider its decision if the suspended members acknowledged their actions and sought forgiveness.
“If they realize their errors and come back to the party with genuine remorse, we will consider reinstating them,” he said.
As of the time of this report, Senator Kawu Sumaila and the other suspended members have not responded to the allegations or the party’s decision.
