LAGOS – The Lagos State Chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) says there will be no match past by students on Independence Day anniversary celebration on October 1.
Its Chairman, Mr Olusegun Raheem, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.
Raheem said that this decision was because the union had not received any directive from the state government to mobilise students for the occasion.
According to him, the students would have been mobilised for the march past, “but we have not received any word from the government till now to that effect”.
Raheem said that the state government might probably have alternative plans to hold the event low key as it was the practice in the last three years.
“Gone are the days when students were participating in the Independence Day match past. [eap_ad_1] “For about three years now, the day has been celebrated low key due to security threat,” he said.
The NUT chairman urged the state government to revive the practice and improve on tours, excursions and other fascinating events that could develop the minds of students.
Chief Yomi Otubela, the President, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), also said that there would be no match past by students for security reasons.
Otubela said that private school owners had decided to celebrate the events in their own ways.
“Lagoon Schools is planning to celebrate the occasion on its own as students of the school have been asked to wear green and white attire to commemorate the event.
“Other schools have directed their students to come to school on Thursday in their native attire and bring along local foods to celebrate the event,” he said. (NAN)
