Ado-Ekiti – The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in collaboration with UNICEF, on Tuesday met with stakeholders in Ado-Ekiti as part of the renewed efforts towards eradicating the practice of female genital mutilation in the state.
In his opening remarks, the NOA Coordinator in Ekiti, Mr. Dayo Famosaya, said that the community dialogue was designed to intensify the campaign against the practice at the grassroots.
Famosaya commended the selected community champions for helping the agency to sensitise the people on the need to stop cutting female genitals.
Mrs. Kemi Akinleye, a resource person at the forum, who is also the desk officer in charge of female genital mutilation at Ekiti State Ministry of Health, urge those engaged in the practice desist because of the health challenges associated with it.
In his remark, the traditional ruler of Asin-Ekiti, Oba Abraham Babalola, said that the programme had broadened his knowledge on the disadvantages of female genital mutilation.
Similarly, two of the participants, Bishop Olorunfemi Arowojebutu and Alhaji Onipede Jimoh, commended NOA for organising such an enlightenment programme for the community.(NAN)
