Abuja = The Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Garba Abari has urged the youth to join the campaign to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Abari’s call is contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Director (Press), Mr Fidel Agu which was made available to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.
Abari, who spoke at a one-day sensitisation workshop on “Environmental Sustainability and Civic Education’’ noted that the youth were key instrument to ensuring the quest for a sustainable environment.
Abari was represented by the Director of Special Duties in the agency, Mrs Mette Edekobi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was attended by students from different secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Abari stressed the need for the students to imbibe habits of cleanliness and responsibility in ensuring that their environment was kept clean always.
“Imbibe the national core values of discipline, integrity, dignity of labour, social justice, religious tolerance, self-reliance and patriotism for a better society.
“This is in line with the “Change Begins with Me” reorientation programme of government,’’ Abari said.
NOA also donated library materials to Government Secondary School (GSS) Nyanya, Abuja, where the event was held and urged the students to read wide.
The statement quoted Mrs Blessing Ezendu, the Principal, GSS Nyanya as saying “the workshop was timely considering the impacts of climate change’’.
Ezendu said that everyone had a part to play in ensuring a sustainable environment.
“This will help to create awareness and discourage greenhouse emissions, deforestation, use of non-biodegradable materials and other climate change inducing practices in the community.’’
