LAGOS – Some stakeholders in the Nollywood on Thursday said that scriptwriting could be improved through engagement of budding scriptwriters in advanced courses.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that efforts of the scriptwriters were not being undervalued, but needed to be urgently improved on. A movie producer, Lancelot Udoh, said that Nollywood scriptwriters needed to constantly engage in scriptwriting.
“A good screenplay is one of the major factors responsible for a good movie; that is why it is necessary for our scriptwriters to get some tutoring from abroad.
“Nigerian movies are on the global front, Nigeria being the third highest producer of films in the world; thus, a first-rate scripted movie will make us to stand out,” he said.
Also, Seun Aboderin, a Lecturer of Performing and Theatre Arts, University of Lagos, said that inclusion of professional courses in school curricula would help to advance scriptwriters. “This can catapult Nollywood to be on the same level with its foreign counterparts,” he said.
A novelist and playwright, Nkiru Nwakanma, also said that advancement in scriptwriting would enable Nollywood to develop faster. “The basic ingredient for Nollywood to have an international presence, even without major graphics, is unique storytelling ability through creativity.
“Creativity can be acquired through mastery of the English Language, abilities to play on words and task the brain to understand complex nature in most simple ways.
“For example, the vision of images, so complex in writing form, can appear simple when seen. “Mastery involves taking courses in desired areas and also giving room for criticism,” she said. (NAN)
