Eket (Akwa Ibom), – The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), on Sunday, said it did not investigate the alleged April 9 oil spill from ExxonMobil’s offshore facility in Akwa Ibom.
The State Director of the Agency in Akwa Ibom, Mr Enyi Udeogu, made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Eket, Akwa Ibom.
Edeogu said that the said oil spill was not investigated because ExxonMobil did not call for it.
His clarification was sequel to series of protests by some youths in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom, who claimed that there was a spill from ExxonMobil’s offshore facility in Akwa Ibom on April 9.
He further said that the said April 9 incident was not investigated because there were conflicting reports by the community and the oil company concerning it.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“The community reported to us on April 9 that there was an oil spill, while ExxonMobil claimed the incident occurred on April 11.
“ExxonMobil said it would not organise any investigation because the said oil spill of April 9 was not from their facility.’’
The director, however, said that the Agency would investigate the April 11 incident which was reported by the oil company. (NAN)
