Benin – The male and female Chess teams from Delta have emerged winners of the maiden South-South National Sports Commission (NSC) Chess Competition held in Benin.

The male team clinched the top position with 10 points, pushing Edo with 7 points to the second spot, while Rivers, which did not record any point was placed third.
In the female category, Team Delta was also placed first with 12 points, Edo was second with 6 points while the third placed Rivers did not secure any point.
Peter Agbonkhese, who doubled as the National and Edo Chess Coach commended the organisers over the high level of play by the contestants.
Agbonkhese praised the Delta teams for their competitive play but noted that Edo used their team B and C players for the competition.
He said the competition would go a long way in helping the region to prepare the players for the National Sports Festival.
Paul Boyo, a Chief Arbiter, who officiated during the competition, urged the players to continue to work hard and improve on their tactics.
He also called on other states within the zone that did participate in the competition to take part during subsequent tournaments.
NAN reports that the competition which ran from Aug. 20 to Aug. 22 was jointly organised by the Nigerian Chess Federation, NSC south-south zone and the Edo State Sports Commission. (NAN)
