Lagos – The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Apapa Branch, on Thursday urged engineers to always uphold the ethics of the profession by not compromising standards.
The Chairman of the society, Mr Olalekan Taiwo, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Taiwo said that upholding the ethics of engineering would reduce the incidence of collapsed buildings.
“I am not a civil engineer and I am not a highway engineer either; but I would like to talk to our colleagues; we shouldn’t be compromised.
“We should allow standards to be standards.

“When a particular road or bridge is designed to certain specifications, we should allow the specifications to work.
“Let us not connive with some funny contractors (because) it could be them, it could be their family members that would be caught up in the mess (that could follow).
“It is a passionate appeal; let us reclaim our engineering for engineers.
“The current President of the NSE, Engineer Otis Anyaeji is going about nationwide making a passionate appeal to all our colleagues, senior engineers, middle level engineers, and fresh entrants.
“Let us work by the rules; let us try to achieve the maximum standards.
“We should not, at any point in time, compromise standards.’’
Taiwo said that the society was planning to write a new code of standards to properly restructure engineering and ensure strict compliance with the ethics of the profession.
He said that some obsolete British and American standards currently being used would be reviewed to suit the nation’s current demands. (NAN)
