Lafia – The Nasarawa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) says it will partner with the Police Command in the state to sensitise the public on ways to reduce crime in the area.
The Chairman of the union, Mr Dogo Shama, stated this on Wednesday when members of the council paid a courtesy visit to the command.
According to Shama , journalists like the police contribute to nation building by disseminating information on the happenings in the society to the public.
He said police and journalists in the state needed to work together to discharge their duties.
“As Journalists practicing in the state, we will give adequate coverage to the activities of the police to reduce crime rate in the state.
“Information from journalists will go a long way in assisting the police to arrest criminals or trace their hideouts,“ he said.
The chairman said the union would organise a joint workshop on journalists/police relationship to cement the existing relationship between the two parties.
He, therefore, called on journalists in the state to report happenings objectively in line with the ethics of the profession.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abubakar Sadiq-Bello, promised to support the union to achieve peace and unity in the area.
Sadiq-Bello said in spite of the challenges confronting the command, it would do its best in policing the state.
He urged journalists and the general public to always give the police relevant information to help in curtailing the activities of criminals.
He said that the fight against crime could only succeed if members of the public assisted the police with relevant information.
