Miss Oluwateniola Omidiji, a 19-year-old nursing student at Babcock University, has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for wrongful detention.
Omidiji initiated a fundamental rights case against the EFCC, alleging that she was unlawfully detained by EFCC personnel over a debt dispute involving her mother and one Mr. Charles Nwoko.
According to the lawsuit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Omidiji was taken from the university premises during exams on April 26, 2024, by EFCC personnel from its Lagos Zonal Command and held for several days.
In her application, represented by her lawyer Chijioke Emeka (SAN) of Auxano Law, Omidiji argued that she was a minor when her mother entered into the alleged partnership with Nwoko and was not involved in the transaction.
She contended that it was unjust for the EFCC to detain her over a matter involving her mother and asserted that the dispute was a civil matter.
Omidiji requested the court to order the EFCC to refrain from involving her in the issue and to compensate her with N10,000,000 for violating her fundamental rights.
Although the court has not yet scheduled a hearing date for the case, Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered Omidiji’s release following an application for the enforcement of her fundamental human rights by her lawyer.
Omidiji had spent 11 days in EFCC custody before being released.
