NURTW Official Docked For Allegedly Hitting Conductor With Sharp Object

Lagos  –   A 22-year-old union worker, Sunday Olaopa, who allegedly assaulted a conductor by hitting him with a sharp object on his manhood, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Olaopa, an official of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers (NURTW), is standing trial on a one-count charge of assault.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that the accused, who entered a “not guilty plea, committed the offence on Feb. 23 at Iju Ishaga Garage, Lagos.

Unah alleged that Olaopa, who resides at Olayinka Street, Ajuwon, Lagos, assaulted the complainant, Ubong Bassey, by using a sharp object to hit him on his manhood.

He said the accused hit the complainant because he refused to drop his ticket money on time.

Unah said that Bassey sustained injuries on his manhood, as a result of the sharp object Olaopa used to hit him.

He said that Bassey reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.

The offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for assault occasioning harm.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Gbajumo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing till March 20.
