Kaiama (Kwara) – The Kwara chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has advised the Federal Government to recruit only people with teaching background during the planned recruitment of 500, 000 teachers.
The chairman of the union in the state, Mr Musa Abubakar, gave the advice on Monday in Kaiama, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
NAN recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had indicated that the Federal Government would recruit 500, 000 teachers while presenting the 2016 budget estimate before the National Assembly.
Abubakar advised the government to be wary of those who want to use teaching as a stepping stone and later abandon the job.
“The plan to recruit 500, 000 teachers is very realistic.
“When you look at the UNESCO recommendation; when you look at the number of enrolment in our schools today and the number of teachers we have, you will find out that there is a missing link.
“A lot of gap has been created particularly in some local governments.

“Like Kaiama for instance, we have some schools from primary one to six where we have just a teacher and an Arabic teacher.
“I want the Federal Government to take caution; it should only employ those with teaching background and those that have a flair for the profession,’’ he said. (NAN)
