Abuja – Obiora Nwankwo, President of Abuja Country Club, has called for more support for the club’s President Cup tennis tournament.
Nwankwo who spoke after the 2017 edition of the competition which ended late Saturday said more support was necessary as the competition was key to the sport’s development.
“Abuja Country Club’s President Cup tennis tournament is an annual event designed to encourage the fitness of our members.
“We therefore need total support for the tournament. But it goes beyond being just a club tournament, because it is key to promoting tennis in Nigeria,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition was won by Aliyu Shehu who defeated Brendan Bassey 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
Shehu who was defending the title had beaten Bassey in the first set 6-3, before the latter leveled up with a 7-5 win in the second set.
This took the game into the third set where Shehu won in a tie-breaker.
Speaking later, Shehu dedicated the victory to hard work and passion for tennis which were his secret of success.
Earlier, Shehu had paired Aliyu Ismaila to beat the pair of Jide Lawal and Ethelbert Muoka in the doubles final 6-4, 7-5.
NAN reports that 10 trophies were handed out to winners in different categories of the competition during the closing ceremony.
