Benin – Edo Government on Friday appealed to its residents to obey the partial shutdown rules laid down to help curtail the spread ofcoronavirus epidemic.
Edo Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu made the appealed when he addressed newsmen inEdo Government House, Benin.
According to him, we went round today to monitor compliance to partial shutdown and some people are still trading on commodities other than food items.
“Some traders are still trading on commodities other than food products and this act is unacceptable.
“Coronavirus is real and it is for our own good that this decision is taken by the government.
“I appeal to our citizens to obey this rules and stay at home; we need you alive to contribute your own quarters to the developmentof the state and our country.
“You need to obey this rule to help stop the spread ofcoronavirusin our dear state.
“Social distancing is still not observed in some of the markets we visited and this is not acceptable.
“We urge the security agencies to step up in enforcing the partial shutdown among our citizens. Same should be done with our commercial drivers to carry the designated numbers of passengers, ” he said.
For his part, the South-South coordinator of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Wale Famiyesin urged the people to kindly obey the shutdown rules, adding that this would help in curbing the spread of Covid-19.
