AWKA, MARCH – About 100 children born with congenital abnormality of cleft lips palate have benefited from free surgery sponsored by a non-governmental organisation founded by Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, the Wife of Anambra Governor.
Cleft lips palate is a congenital abnormality that leaves a child deformed on the lips and mouth, resulting in his not feeding and speaking well.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the surgery is being conducted at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra.
The Caring Family Enhancement ((CAFE) in Initiative of Obiano is sponsoring the surgery.
In an interview with NAN in Awka on Thursday, Obiano said that she embarked on the philanthropic gesture out of concern for some children from the state suffering from the ailment.
She said that she drew the attention of official of CAFE to the plight of the affected children as soon as she got the statistics.
According to her, about 100 children were selected for immediate treatment to ensure stability.
Obiano expressed satisfaction with the progress of the treatment being given to the children.
She gave the assurance that the needed assistance would be given to achieve good health in Anambra.
“I visited NAUTH in Nnewi to assess the progress of the free cleft lip and palate surgery which being sponsored by my CAFE.
“ I am happy that the children are in good hands. Why do we have to leave our children to suffer curable and preventive diseases?

“As a mother, I have sympathy on children with cleft lip and other health issues and will do my best to put smiles on their faces,” she said.
Obiano promised that CAFE would continue to support the treatment of children with abnormalities and other health issues. (NAN)
