Alhaji Bashir Tofa, the Presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in the annulled 12 June 1993 election is dead. He was aged 74.
Tofa was MKO Abiola’s major challenger in the controversial presidential election, annulled by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida.
Daily Post quotes family sources as saying Tofa died in the early hours of Monday after an illness.
Confirming his death, one of the deceased’s relations, Alhaji Muhammad, said “Alhaji Bashir tofa died after being admitted in hospital for sometime.”
A Kanuri Muslim, Tofa was born on 20 June 1947 in Kano. He attended Rumfa College (1962–1966) and London Guildhall College (1970–1973).
