Abeokuta – As part of measures to maintain its status as the cleanest campus in Ogun, the Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, has launched an Environmental corps (E-corps).
The Rector, Dr Kolawole Oyeyinka, who spoke at the 14th matriculation ceremony of the polytechnic, said that the institution would stop at nothing to ensure regular improvement and maintenance of its infrastructure.
Oyeyinka noted that the E-corps would see to the effective and judicious use of the institution’s facilities.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the corps comprises of both the academic and non-academic staff as well as students of the institution.
While formally launching the corps, the rector urged other tertiary institutions in the state to model after the polytechnic, adding that this would, in no small measure, raise the bar of education in the state.
He also disclosed that the polytechnic had embarked on construction of a 1,200 capacity auditorium, a school of management building and the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Skills Acquisition Centre.
“When completed, the centre will train 1,000 students per session, ranging from skills acquisition, auto-mechanic, building service, block making, block laying and pipe laying, amongst others,” he said.
Oyeyinka, however, warned the students of the institution to steer clear of cultism and other vices.
He said that the institution had zero tolerance for any form of misconduct and cult-related practices, saying management would not hesitate to expel any student who embarked on any act that could tarnish the image of the institution.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof Sidi Osho, who was represented by an official of the ministry, Mr Erinle Olanrewaju, urged the new students to be good ambassadors of the institution.
