ABEOKUTA- Two nursing mothers and eight other inmates were freed on Wednesday from the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the released inmates — three women and seven men — were detained for failing to meet their bail conditions.
NAN also reports that they were held for various offences, including stealing, conspiracy, breach of peace, and loitering, NAN reports.
Among the 10 released inmates were two nursing mothers, seen carrying their babies on their backs.
The Olu of Itori, Oba Abul-Fatai Akamo, visited the facility in Abeokuta and facilitated their release to mark his 21st year on the throne.
Akamo paid their fines, gave them cash for transport, and donated other items to the facility.
He also donated N2 million to the correctional centre in appreciation of the State Controller, Adesina Abioye, and officers for their dedication.
The traditional ruler, accompanied by the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola, urged the inmates to remain hopeful about their future.
He advised them to pray for the governor and the state, believing they would not be forgotten.
“Do not give up; tomorrow will be great. Always pray for Gov. Dapo Abiodun. He has a good heart and will remember you.
“Everything you have told us today will be delivered to him,” he said.
Controller A.K. Abioye, speaking on behalf of the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, thanked the traditional ruler for his generosity.
“I appreciate Kabiyesi for this. He promised to pay fines and donate items for our inmates during his 21st anniversary, and he fulfilled it.
“Not everyone keeps their promises. We need more philanthropists to support us so we can develop this place,” Abioye added.
He urged the freed inmates to reflect on their experiences and apply the lessons learned during their time at the facility. (NAN)
