OWERRI – Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has urged Nigerians to observe the Olympic Day Run, and participate in other sporting activities in order to keep fit.
The governor who spoke on Saturday in Owerri, when he addressed participants at the 2014 Olympic Day Run, said sports has brought honour to the country.
Represented by his deputy, Mr Eze Madumere, he stressed the need for the nation to continue to promote sports and to encourage sportsmen and women.
Okorocha said that the nation’s leadership must continue to promote activities that would enhance unity and peaceful co-existence in the country.
“Today, everybody in the world is observing Olympic Day Run, this is the kind of unity and harmony we are clamouring for in this nation”, he said.
Okorocha said physical exercise was another way of keeping the body and soul fit.
“A lot of people are suffering from different kind of diseases which is caused by lack of exercise.
“We should make it as a habit to continue to exercise our body regularly for us to be mentally and physically fit”, he said.
Okorocha commended Imo athletes for turning out in large numbers to observe the Olympic Day Run, adding that Imo has produced international athletes.
Director General of Imo Sports Council Christian Ibekwe, said the Olympic Day Run was introduced to promote Olympic values to all part of the world.(NAN)
