Akure – The Ondo State House of Assembly on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to urgently address the inadequacies of security agencies in Nigeria.
The call was sequel to a motion acting Majority Leader, Mr Olamide George, on Matter of Urgent Public Importance, which was unanimously adopted by members at plenary in Akure.
The lawmakers in the session presided by the acting Speaker, Mr Malachi Coker, urged the government to support and equip the nation’s security agencies to enable them to discharge their duties adequately.
“We have bombings in the North and kidnapping in almost every part of the country, which is why the security agencies need to be well equipped,” George said while speaking on the motion.
In his contribution, Mr Suleiman Maito (Akoko North-West 1) also stressed that the rampart kidnapping in the country was a major source of insecurity.
On another motion, Mr Iroju Ogundeji (Odigbo 1) called on 10 members, excluding those allegedly suspended, who were absent at the sitting to come back to the House in the interest of the state.
“We remain 23 members in the assembly now due to the suspension of three members. The other 10 members are our colleagues and we are not fighting with the executive,” he said.
Ogundeji urged the house to emphasize and stamp the impeachment and suspension of “the former speaker”, Jumoke Akindele; deputy speaker, Fatai Olotu, and majority leader, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu.
The house also constituted a five-member committee to investigate the N15 million which Akindele was alleged to have misappropriated.
Akindele, Olotu and Akinsoyinu were purportedly removed and suspended on Friday by 14 out of the 26 members of the assembly for allegedly withdrawing N15 million from the House’s account.
The 14 lawmakers who carried out the suspension comprised of five All Progressive Congress (APC) members and nine of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bode Adeyelu, the Clerk of the house and the Mace were present at the plenary.
Adeyelu swore in Malachi Coker (Ilaje 2) as acting speaker, Ayodele Arowele (Owo 1) as acting deputy speaker and Olamide George, representing Akure North constituency, as acting majority leader.
