Abuja – The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has expressed its readiness to partner with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity (FMLP) to create employment for the teaming population in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Samuel Olowookere, Deputy Director Press of the ministry and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the ILO is committed to deepening relationship with Nigeria through provision of technical cooperation activities to the Federal Government, especially in its efforts at job creation.
The statement said Guy Ryder, Director General of ILO stated this in Ethiopia when he received Sen. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment during 13th African Regional Meeting (ARM) in Addis Ababa.
“The Director General accepted to visit Nigeria, a move which the minister described as unprecedented as no ILO DG has ever visited Nigeria since the foundation of the world body’’, the statement said.
It said Ryder confirmed that ILO had favourably considered Nigeria’s request to set up a decent work multidisciplinary team and upgrading of ILO Nigeria’s office in Abuja.
He added that Nigeria’s strategic position and contributions to the International Labour Diplomacy attributed to ILO’s commitment to the country.
The statement said ILO would also participate in Nigeria’s social security programme initiated by the body.
It said Sen. Chris Ngige during the ARM solicited continued relationship with the ILO, while appreciated the organisation’s role in the provision of technical and financial support for employment generation programmes in Nigeria.
