Kimberly-Clark Nigeria, the producer of baby care and essential feminine products, including baby diaper brand, Huggies, has partnered some health-centres across the country to train women on breastfeeding protection.
This was disclosed on Thursday in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) by Oluwaseyi Tomosori, a Senior Analyst with Quadrant. MSL, the outfit that handles the company’s media.
The health orientation campaign was dedicated to informing, engaging, and galvanizing action on breastfeeding and related issues, while raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding in the first 1,000 days of a new born baby’s life.
It also advocated the full participation of healthcare centres in sharing in the responsibility of protecting breastfeeding, including practices that could protect breastfeeding as well as emphasising good hygiene and sanitation to keep children healthy.
The campaign worked in six hospitals across key local government areas in Lagos state, and other hospitals notably in Anambra, Abia, Imo and Oyo states, the statement said.
According to Tomorrow, Kimberly-Clark’s spokesperson, there is a connection between hygiene and good breastfeeding for a child.
“This is a means to protect breastfeeding,” he said.
The spokesperson added that wet diapers were one of the best indicators that a baby was well hydrated.
“Medically backed by research, keeping an eye on the number of diapers that a baby produces a day, a mother would be able to best respond to her child’s needs.
“This very well shows that diapers are important in the growth and development of newborn babies.
“The choice of diapers can prevent or create discomfort, as certain materials in diapers cause skin irritation and diaper rash,” the spokesperson said.
The statement also stated that mothers during the orientation, were taught to spot quality diapers, since it affects babies’ comfort and influences receptivity to food.
Kimberly-Clark stressed that super absorbent diapers might exacerbate diaper rashes as they trapped moisture and as such, it was best to opt for quality brands which could provide the most efficiency effect without substituting comfort.
