SundiataPost reports that the nationwide hardship protest has been suspended in Lagos by the organizers to evaluate progress and restrategize.
Comrade Hassan Taiwo Soweto, one of the EndBadGovernance protest organizers in Lagos, stated that protesters would not yield to threats from security forces. This response came after Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, declared that protests were banned in the state.
Fayoade mentioned in an interview on Monday that the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protest had been called off following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s speech on Sunday. He said, “The organizers have decided to call off the protest. They believe the President is addressing their demands. Therefore, any gatherings at Gani Fawahimi Freedom Park in Ojota or elsewhere in the state are now unlawful and illegal. We will enforce the law if such gatherings occur.”
He also stated that police presence would be reduced at Ojota, with only a minimal unit remaining to prevent any gatherings.
However, Soweto clarified that the group decided to take Tuesday off to reassess and restrategize. He emphasized that the break did not mean the protest was over, asserting that peaceful protests are constitutional. “We decided to take the day off to assess progress and also restrategize. We won’t bow to any idle threat. We will make an announcement about our next steps before the end of the day,” he added.
