The Take It Back Movement has announced plans to stage protests in at least 20 locations across Nigeria on June 12, Democracy Day, to demand accountability and reaffirm citizens’ rights.
The protests aim to highlight issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, and the erosion of civil liberties under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
National Coordinator Juwon Sanyaolu stated, “We are using June 12 as a day to exercise our democratic rights. The Constitution clearly states that the government’s primary duty is the security and welfare of the people. That has failed under Tinubu.”
Protest venues include Eagle Square in Abuja, multiple locations in Lagos, and other cities across the country. Sanyaolu warned security agencies to protect protesters, citing their constitutional right to protest. He said, “The right to protest is enshrined in the Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court. The police have a duty to protect protesters and ensure their safety.”
The movement also accused the government of suppressing opposition voices and clamping down on freedom of speech. Sanyaolu added, “Under this administration, the civic space is under attack. Government critics are being hounded. We want to raise awareness and push back against this trend.”
The protests aim to “reclaim the soul of the country” and push for better governance.
