ABUJA – Rep. Kole Akinlade (PDP-Yewa South, Ogun) on Sunday commended Federal Government agencies for the peaceful conduct of Osun governorship election.
Akinlade, who is also the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that INEC adn security agencies contributed to the success of the poll.
However, the law maker urged the agencies to demonstrate a higher degree of commitment, impartiality and patriotism in future elections in the country.
He advised politicians against disconnecting themselves with their constituents when elected into office so as to retain the confidence of the citizens.
Akinlade advocated for grassroots politics that would promote responsive and accountable leadership at all levels of governance.
On the Osun poll, he said the people freely and fairly elected the candidate of their choice because of the commitment of INEC, security personnel and the electorate.[eap_ad_2]
“The Osun governorship election has further demonstrated that democracy is waxing stronger in Nigeria.
“You could see that grassroots presence of the candidates played a big role in determining the winner of this election just as it happened in Ekiti.
“Politicians should learn to bridge the gap between them and their people, while delivering the dividends of democracy,” he urged.
He commended South-West indigenes for making wise political decisions devoid of sentiments.
“You can see the political sophistication of the people of the South-West region at play here.
“The political party platform is no longer as important as the personality and pedigree of the individual politician and that is a good development.
“Politicians should understand the needs of their people, feel their pulse and make friends with them, irrespective of social status,’’ he advised.
NAN reports that INEC on Sunday declared Mr Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the Osun governorship election. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
