Ibadan – The Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday extended the tenure of caretaker committee chairmen in the 33 local governments and LCDAs in the state by four months.
The lawmakers unanimously approved the extension at plenary following a letter from Gov. Abiola Ajimobi seeking for the extension of tenure.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ajimobi had earlier in March appointed the current caretaker chairmen.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Michael Adeyemo, quoted the governor as saying in the letter that the extension of tenure became imperative due to the adjournment of the court case on creation of some LCDAs, .
According to him, the matter was adjourned till October.
Adeyemo, however, said that the house was still expecting nominees for the replacement of the three previously disqualified.
He said that the house could not compel the executive to present the names.
Addressing newsmen after the plenary, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Badmus Bolaji, said that the extension was necessary so as not to create vacuum in the administration of the local councils.
He added that the relationship between the committee and people at the grassroots was important to enhance development.
