Ibadan – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State Chapter has called on employers of labour to pay living wage and provide conductive working environment for its employees.
The NLC made the call on Friday in Ibadan at a rally organised to mark the World Day for Decent Work, with the theme “End Corporate Greed.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the World Day for Decent Work which started in 2008 is celebrated annually on Oct. 7.
Alhaji Bayo Titilola-Sodo, the Vice-Chairman, Oyo State NLC, told newsmen that the day was universally set aside by the World Trade Movement to mark decent work place.
Titilola-Sodo said that the idea behind the celebration was to canvass for people-orientated policies and good working conditions.
“The idea behind the celebration is that people should be the main focus of whatever activities or efforts the government is making to end the national or global recession.
“We must come out of recession and whatever activity or template employed by government, individual, companies and organisations must put people and workers at the centre.
“We must end recession. We must take development seriously for growth to return and when its returns, the economy will grow,” he said.
He lamented non-conducive working environment at some work places and non-payment of salaries to workers, who have worked for 30 days in a month.
“We say no to poor pay, enough of poor pay, casualisation, outsourcing, salary arrears, unemployment, non-payment of pension, non-payment of gratuity and bleak national future.
“We want progress, living wage, conductive working environment, decent attitude on our land and in our country,” he said.
Titilola-Sodo said the Ayuba Wabba-led national executive had enjoined all state chapters to sensitise members on the need to say no to poor pay, among others.
