Abuja- Dr Montaser Abuzaid, Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, has called on the international community to support peace ahead of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Nov. 29.
Abuzaid made the call while addressing a news conference in Abuja on Friday.
The envoy recalled that the day was declared by the United Nations Security Council in November 1977 to support the peace process in the recognition of the State of Palestine.
Expressing his government’s gratitude to Nigeria and the rest of the international community for their solidarity, Abuzaid reiterated the need for the implementation of the UN resolutions on Palestine.
“We reiterate our urgent calls to the international community to act forthwith to compel Israel to comply with its obligations relevant to the UN resolutions and international commitment.
“In this regard, we have presented, through the Arab Group, a draft resolution to the Security Council, a time frame for ending the Israeli occupation of our land.
“We want peace that ensures security and dignity for all our people because we are peace-loving people, and if we achieve peace here, we will achieve peace globally,” he said.
The envoy also restated the readiness of the Palestinian people to “make a historic compromise in order to reach a solution to the conflict with Israel.”
“A solution that conforms with international resolutions through the establishment of our Palestinian State with only 22 per cent of the territory of the historic Palestine.”
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is generally held on November 29 each year to mark the anniversary of resolution 181.
The resolution recommended the creation of independent Arab and Jewish States and the Special International Regime for the City of Jerusalem.
The day for the year 2014 was commemorated on Nov. 24 at the UN headquarters with a special meeting of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
According to the UN, the observance of the day also encouraged Member States to continue to give the widest support and publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity. (NAN)
