Port Harcourt- Mr Opunabo Inko-Tariah, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers, on Monday urged political parties to educate their members to adhere to the recent peace accord signed by their leaders.
Tariah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that President Goodluck Jonathan deserved commendation for initiating the peace pact to ensure credible election.
“This is a novelty and it is the first time party leaders are signing this peace accord. It’s a welcome development,’’ he said.
The chieftain urged party leaders to educate their followers and members on the need to have violent free election.

‘’So, I t is not just about signing the peace accord, that is not good enough.
‘’It is about educating the voters, your followers, the electorate on the need for them to conduct themselves properly during this period, before, during the election and after the election, irrespective of the outcome of the election.
‘’No matter how aggrieved you are, you have the law courts.’’
Tariah said there was need to educate party members and supporters on the dangers of election violence so as not to betray the peace accord.
‘’So, while we commend the peace pact, i do not think that is enough, we should also ensure that our supporters, the electorate, the voter are aware of the dangers of the consequences of violence.
“We should dissuade them and it is only at that point that we can say that the peace accord is meaningful.’’
He said that the peace accord would guarantee credible polls if properly implemented. (NAN)
