Akure – Mr Dele Akinyan, the Chairman of Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB), Ondo chapter, on Friday advised Nigerians to patronise professional builders in order to reduce cases of building collapse.
Akinyan gave the advice in Akure while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of a road show organised by NIOB as part of activities to mark the 2020 Builders Day
He explained that the road show was to sensitise the public on the dangers of building collapse “due to untrained builders on site which had killed several people in the country.”
“There are people that are responsible for building process. They are trained and certified by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).
“When they manage buildings, there will be less incidence of building collapse, hence the need to domesticate the National Building Code.
“It has to be enacted in Ondo State so that the various professionals in the building industry will know their limits. That is why we are taking our request to governments,” he said.
Also speaking to NAN, Prof. Deji Ogunyemi, a member of CORBON, said the way to prevent incidence of building collapse was to allow builders take their rightful place in the building team.
Ogunyemi, who is also the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), explained that the National Building Code needed to become law all over the country just as in Lagos and Abuja.
“There is no such law in Ondo, so we call on Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and Speaker of the House of Assembly to assist in ensuring that we domesticate the National Building Code which states clearly the role of every professional,” he said.
NAN reports that the road show took the builders round major streets of Akure, including the popular Oba Adesida Road and the ever busy Arakale Road.
