IBADAN – Alhaja Fadhilah Balogun, the Founder of Channel For Widow Relief Initiative (CFWRI), on Tuesday advised government to pay attention to the plight of widows in the country.
Balogun gave the advice at a three-day empowerment programme on poultry keeping organised by the NGO.
She said government needed to conduct a census of widows in the country so as to plan for their needs.
Balogun also said many widows suffer after the death of their husbands and therefore needed government support.
She also called on governors’ wives who engage in charitable work to liaise with NGOs involved in assisting widows.
Balogun said CFWRI was established in November 2011 to protect the interest and well being of widows and their children.
She said that the organisation had 260 registered widows, adding that many of them had benefited from the organisation’s empowerment programmes.
The wife of the state governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, advised the widows to pay attention to the lecture on poultry keeping in order to be self-reliant.
Represented by a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Iyvobose Alabi, Ajimobi said the programme would also keep the widows engaged.(NAN)
