PDP inaugurates committee for Cross River congresses

Calabar – The Cross River chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday inaugurated a seven-man zoning committee for the forthcoming state congress.

The Chairman of the party, Mr John Okon, said during the inauguration in Calabar that the committee became necessary to ensure equity, justice and fair-play during Ward, Local Government, State and National Congresses.

He said “this is a team that will inject confidence into members of the party in Cross River.”

Okon added that the committee’s terms of reference included determining the sharing formula for party positions during the state congress.

He noted that “this will ensure equitable allocation of party positions meant for Cross River at the zonal and national levels, as well as make recommendations on how these positions should be shared equitably among the three senatorial zones.”

The chairman reminded the committee of the need to take into consideration the 35 per cent affirmation for women and to turn in their recommendations within two weeks.

He said members of the committee were carefully selected based on their proven integrity.

They include the state Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu, Speaker of House of Assembly, John Lebo and Sen. Gershom Bassey representing Southern Senatorial District.

The PDP chairman added that “we believe that as loyal, responsible and committed members of the party, you will perform this assignment with utmost diligence.”

Responding, the deputy governor, who is the Chairman of the committee, promised to commence sitting immediately in order to meet up with the two weeks given to it.

Esu thanked the party for giving them the opportunity to serve and assured that they would not let the party down.

“I am always ready to serve my party. Anytime I am called to serve I will not hesitate to come,’’ he said.

The PDP ward congress is expected to begin on April 23. (NAN)
