The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned Senate President Godswill Akpabio, branding him as an adversary of the Rivers people based on his recent actions and statements in the state.
The party’s criticism came in response to Akpabio’s comments regarding a statement made by Governor Siminialayi Fubara during the burial of the late Herbert Wigwe, wife, and son, at Isiokpo last Saturday. The PDP accused Akpabio of disrespecting the governor and the solemn occasion of the Wigwes’ funeral by suggesting that Fubara should exit politics instead of promoting moderation and reverence for the divine.
In a statement by the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Sydney Tambari Gbara, the party condemned Akpabio’s remarks as insensitive and derogatory towards the memory of the deceased and the office of the Governor of Rivers State.
The PDP expressed concern over Akpabio’s consistent display of animosity and hostility towards Rivers State, citing instances such as his deceptive actions during the East/West Road protest in 2021 and the harassment of Joy Nunieh during her tenure as NDDC acting Managing Director. The party further criticized Akpabio for making provocative remarks about the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State during a recent event in Tai Local Government Area.
The PDP accused Akpabio of attempting to sow seeds of discord and destabilization in the state through his reckless comments, emphasizing that such behavior would not be tolerated by the people of Rivers State. The PDP called on Akpabio to refrain from making further verbal attacks and irresponsible statements against Governor Fubara, warning that the people of Rivers State would not tolerate such behavior from someone who has chosen to align with forces seeking to undermine the state’s progress.
The party urged Rivers people to remain steadfast in their support for the present administration and to stand united against any attempts to derail the state’s development agenda. Additionally, the PDP encouraged the people to join forces with the party in denouncing individuals like Akpabio who pose a threat to the state’s stability and prosperity.
