Maria Oligbi-Edeko, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Esan North East II, has resigned from her role as Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Naija News reports that Oligbi-Edeko, who was elected to the position on June 16, 2023, stepped down because the PDP now holds a minority position in the Assembly.
Speaking during Monday’s plenary session, Oligbi-Edeko explained that her decision was made in the interest of justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies.
She said:
“I resigned from my position to allow for justice, fairness, and equity for all the constituencies.”
She also thanked PDP leaders and members for trusting her to represent her people in the House.
In response to her resignation, fellow lawmakers praised Oligbi-Edeko for her dedication, passion, and integrity, saying she made valuable contributions during her time as Deputy Speaker.
After her resignation, Osamwonyi Atu, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member representing Orhionmwon East, was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
The Majority Leader, Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC – Esan West), put forward a motion that Atu should be given all the benefits and entitlements of the Deputy Speaker’s office. The Minority Leader, Charity Airobarueghian (PDP – Ovia North East I), supported the motion, which was then adopted by the entire House.
