ABUJA – Ahead of the 2015 general election, the National Commandant, Peace Corp of Nigeria (PCN), Mr Dickson Akoh, has urged youths to be ambassadors of peace.
Akoh made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja as part of activities to herald the UN international day for peace schedule for Sept. 21.
He said this year’s theme “The Rights of People to Peace” was visible only when things are done rightly.
“Globally, people have rights to peace, when resources are put in place to ensure peace there would be no war situation.
“When you spend more for peace by creating the enabling environment for peace to thrive, you spend less during war,” Akoh said.
He said once the Federal Government had done the needful for people to live peacefully, even the war situation may not arise at all.
Akoh said that government should continue to create the enabling environment for peace by genuinely empowering unemployed youths. [eap_ad_2] He said due to the significance of this year’s celebration, a series of activities to drive the message of peace across the country had been lined up.
“Peace day celebration is very significant to this organisation in the sense that we have made a lot of commitment over peace building, advocacy and conflict resolution.
“As part of activities to celebrate the day, I will be leading a five-man delegation to the UN headquarter where extensive discussions will be held on the post-MDG programmes,” Akoh said.
He said a series of programmes had been lined up to enlighten people on the need for peaceful co-existence and to embrace dialogue in conflict situations.
“There would be candle light procession on the Sept. 20 at the old parade ground to the peace garden at the International Conference Centre (ICC) to call for a cessation where there are hostilities.
“On the peace day, there would be a novelty football match between the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) and Peace Corp, among other activities,” Akoh said.
NAN reports that the PCN is a non-governmental uniformed youth organisation committed to human creativity, peace and youth development. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
