Abuja – A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Kolade Victor-Akinjo, said on Wednesday that the ultimate concern of the 8th National Assembly irrespective of party affiliation was the peoples welfare.
Victor-Akinjo, representing Ilaje South Federal Constituency, Ondo State, said this in Abuja at a programme to welcome lawmakers representing Ondo State in the National Assembly, organised by the Ondo State Liaison Office.
He said that though members came on the platform of different political parties, the peoples’ welfare should be the genuine concern of every member.
The lawmaker, however, called for a law that would ensure people’s welfare.
Victor-Akinjo assured that lawmakers would not derail in their responsibilities to provide meaningful and responsible leadership to the citizenry.
“We must work all night to ensure we fix the unemployment issues in this country.
“We are here to work and make an impact,’’ he said.
He said that the welfare of Nigerians should be the supreme concern of every legislator, adding that the government must do all within its power to reduce importation and encourage exportation.
“Nigeria is a country thriving on mono product and fully dependent on importation; our exportation is at its lowest ebbs and the implication is that we export employment opportunities and import crises.
“We have refused to diversify our economy and by the grace of God, the current parliament will shed the load of mono product in the country,” he said.
Victor-Akinjo said that this would increase the value of naira, thereby, making Nigerians who were anxious to go abroad for greener pasture to have a rethink.
He decried the high rate of unemployment in the country, saying the figure had been rising by the day, saying “this is unacceptable’’.
