Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has said his role in the planned coalition for the 2027 election is focused on ending bad governance, hunger, and poverty in Nigeria.
Obi made this statement while responding to questions about rumors that he had agreed to be Atiku Abubakar’s running mate under a one-term power-sharing deal. Atiku was the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Naija News earlier reported that sources told Punch that the deal was discussed earlier this year when Obi and Atiku met in the United Kingdom. According to the sources, Atiku agreed to serve only one four-year term, and Obi reportedly accepted to be his vice-presidential running mate.
One party leader said both men had reached a private agreement and were now discussing the plan with their key supporters before making it public.
However, when Peter Obi spoke on Monday in Kubwa, Abuja, during a donation event organized by the Anglican Church to support a school and hospital project, he did not confirm or deny that a deal had been made.
Obi instead made it clear that his main concern is improving the lives of Nigerians through a united effort.
He said:
“You can make of the report what you want, but I’m in a coalition against bad governance, hunger, and poverty.”
