Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, along with the 29-member caretaker committee, has announced plans to appeal a Federal High Court ruling that confirmed Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman.
The court in Abuja declared that the national convention which reinstated Abure and his National Working Committee was in accordance with Nigerian law. It also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the party leadership.
However, Obi’s group disagrees with the court’s decision, arguing that the Nnewi convention was not inclusive enough.
Senator Nenadi Usman, who chairs the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, released a statement asking party members to stay calm while they work on appealing the ruling.
In the statement, she said, “This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee). We discussed today’s judgment.
“The case started before the Caretaker Committee was formed. But after being informed, we decided to join the case and have now resolved to appeal the judgment.
“I ask all party members to remain peaceful as we continue our efforts to bring everyone together.”
