ABUJA – The President of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), Ahmed Maude, has said that the petitions written by of some its members is preventing the association from deciding on its forthcoming election.
Maude told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the four councils had written a petition and it was affecting the date and venue for the association’s national election.
He said that the association had already decided to hold the national elections in January but a date and venue had not been fixed.
He said that the society and council elections had already been done but some council elections were inconclusive, noting that all elections must be concluded before the national election.
The NRA president mentioned Kano, Enugu, Abia and Benue as the councils with pending issues.
“The society and council elections took place in October and November, respectively as earlier scheduled but we had some problems in four councils during their elections.
“We have already received petitions from them and we will look at the petitions before going to the national election.
“For the national election, we have already decided that it will hold in January 2015, though our tenure expires in February.
“We must know that because of the country’s general election scheduled for February, ours must hold.
“So, we are proposing to hold the election in the third week of January, but no date and venue has been fixed yet,’’ Maude said.
Meanwhile, Kingsley Nwachi, the Secretary of the NRA Electoral Committee, has said that the sales of form for the election will commence on Dec. 26.
“The sales of forms for all positions in the forthcoming election will start on Dec. 26 and run through till Jan. 10, which is the final date for submission of forms.
“And this is to ensure that we start screening of the forms to know who the eligible candidates are,’’ Nwachi told NAN.
He said that the committee was ready to conduct a credible election once the NRA Executive Committee members arrive at a date and venue.
NAN reports that there are 12 positions to be contested for at the election.
This are the office of the President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, Treasurer, Financial Secretary and Deputy Financial Secretary.
The others are Training Officer, Deputy Training Officer and Publicity Secretary and Welfare Officer. (NAN)
