Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Nigerians are grieved as all roads lead to Oko, Anambra State, the home town of late former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme, where who is who in Nigeria and other foreign dignitaries are gathered to pay their last respect to a man who many have described as one of the finest and selfless leaders Nigeria has ever produced.
He was the only person history recorded to have left office poorer than his status (wealth-wise) prior to his assumption office in Nigeria.
Former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme is known to have played politics without bitterness. It was erudite Ekwueme who, in 1997/98 led a group known as G-34 that wrestled power from the then military junta of Gen. Sani Abacha.
This group which later metamorphosed into a political party, PDP, provided the opportunity for Dr Alex Ekwueme to grab the ticket as the party’s flagbearer in the 1999, but as a thorough bred democrat, he opted for a transparent and all encompassing contest.
Nigerians and the generations of Nigerians yet unborn will continue to miss the wisdom and statesmanship Dr Alex Ekwueme exemplified.
