Abuja- Some residents of Abuja on Monday said piecing of ears and other parts of the body was common among the youths, who do it mostly as a fashion statement.
A cross section of respondent interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that piercing was common among the younger generation.
Miss Glory Elendu, a Corps member said that body piercing was a form of cutting or puncturing of the human body which might be adorned with jewellery “and is mostly done to follow the fashion trend of a society.’’
According to her, ear piercing and other parts of the body are done for various reasons. Most people do it for religious, self expression or fashion purpose, especially the nose and upper ear piercing.
“Many piercings are done by individuals who are non-professionals which is not healthy as it could lead to infections, allergic reactions, scarring and physical injuries,’’ she said.
Desmond Nwankwo, a Student of University of Abuja, told NAN that piercing of body parts “has so many negative effects, especially on an individual’s moral standing because people feel persons with piercing are irresponsible.

“People tend to see such persons as low in moral in the society. Some piercing of body parts are so irritating and disgusting like the nipples and lip piercing; I see no reason why people attach so much value to it. All the same it depends on individual’s lifestyle.
“Attaching so much value on ear piercing is not worth it because they are so many things you can apply on your face that would add to your facial look like sticker earrings or nose rings.
“I think the sticker earrings are more preferable and advisable to that of piercing, it has no negative effect because it is something just fixed not pierced,’’ he said.
“Miss Patience Attah, a receptionist said that some do it because of the secret societies they belong to in order to identify their members.
“Some do it also because they think it is the right thing to do, not fully knowing the implications attached to it because of ignorance,’’ he said.
Mr Cletus Amadi, a typist said that body piercing was not advisable and should not be practiced because “it is barbaric’’.
“No matter what the reasons might be, it is still very wrong for Christians to be involved in such acts.
“Am not trying to condemn anybody here but what am trying to say is that we are all beautifully created by God and I see no reason why most of us still doubt his creations,’’ he said. (NAN)
