Abuja – The Police on Thursday arraigned a driver, Kelvin Anayor, in a Karmo Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly extorting N50,000 from a passenger.
Anayor, who resides in Karmo village, Abuja, is facing a two-count charge bordering on joint act and extortion.
According to the prosecutor, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, one Christiana David of Masaka in Nasarawa State, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on March 4.
Ukagha said the defendant, who pretended to be a taxi driver and two others now at large, deceived the complainant, who entered a vehicle at Wuse going to Bannex junction.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant collected N50,000 from the complaint.
She said the defendant also criminally and intentionally stole the complainant’s cell phone, valued at N451,000 and her ATM card.
The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the phone was tracked, while efforts made to arrest the two other accomplices proved abortive.
The offences contravened the provisions of Sections 79 and 292 of the Penal Code.
The defendant pleaded not guilty, while the judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, admitted him to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned until May 6 for hearing.
