Police arraign man, 21, charged with theft, connivance

Abuja – The police on Wednesday arraigned a 27-year-old man, Iluwa Ismail, in a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly conniving with another man currently at large to steal a lady’s mobile phone.

Ismail, of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of connivance and theft.

The prosecutor, Zeerah Doglass, had told the court that one Elizabeth Awurawala of Gwarimpa Village reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on Jan. 1.

She said that the defendant, on that same date, met the plaintiff at Jabi Lake, Abuja, where she went for a new year picnic.

She added that Ismail criminally opened Awurawala’s bag and took away her Nokia Asha mobile phone, valued at N16,000.

Doglass said that the suspect allegedly passed the phone to his partner, who is still at large, adding that the offences contravened sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and the Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted him bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.

Sadiq said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case until March 7 for hearing. (NAN)
