Abuja – The Police on Wednesday arraigned 42-year-old Udo Jinanwa, in a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged attempted extortion.
Jinanwa, who resides in Angwan Cement, Life Camp, Abuja, is being tried on a count charge of attempted extortion of money from members of the public.
The prosecutor, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 15, at about 3:30 p.m.
Ukagha alleged that defendant on the said date, at Jabi Panda Supermarket, pretended to be a foreigner and attempted to extort money from unsuspecting shoppers.
The prosecutor told the court that the police patrol team, attached to the Utako Police Station Abuja, allegedly saw through his deceit and arrested him.
She said the offence contravened Section 95 of the Penal Code.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N150, 000, with a reliable surety in like sum.
Maiwada ruled that the surety must be a grade level 9 Officer in the Federal Civil Service, whose address must be within the court’s jurisdiction and should be verified by the court’s registrar.
The Judge adjourned the case until May 2, for hearing.
