Abuja – The police on Tuesday arraigned an 18-year-old boy, Safianu Aminu, in a Karu Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly belonging to gang of thieves.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is charged with three counts bordering on criminal conspiracy, possession of dangerous weapons and belonging to gang of thieves.
The Prosecutor, Vincent Osuji, told the court that Aminu was arrested on Nov. 18, by a team from the surveillance unit of the Karu Police Station.
Osuji said that the team in an unmarked vehicle, pretended that their car developed mechanical fault on the Kugbo, Abuja express way.
He said the defendant, who conspired with two other suspects, came out from the bush with a bag containing scissors, knife, reflective jackets and attempted to rob them.
During police investigation, he said the defendant confessed to being member of a gang of thieves who specialise in robbing innocent victims of their valuables on the Kugbo Express Way, Abuja.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97, 319 and 306 of the Penal Code.
However, the defendant denied the allegations.
The Judge, Abubakar Sa’id, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that one of the sureties must be not less than GL07.
Sa’id adjourned the case until Jan. 28 for hearing.
