LAGOS – The Lagos State Police Command on Monday said it had arrested nine suspected armed robbers and recovered two AK 47 rifles as well as a Toyota jeep with registration number AAA 690 BH.
Briefing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti, said the suspected robbers were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Aderanti said that the arrest followed a report by Mr Albert Omisore that the suspected hoodlums attacked his residence at Eletu Ogabi area in Victoria Island on Oct. 9 at 5.30p.m.
The CP said that the case, which was reported at the Bar Beach Police Station, was later transferred to the SARS and after preliminary investigation, the gang leader was arrested. “After their arrest, the suspects confessed to series of armed robbery and car snatching operations around Lagos, including the one at Ogbomo area in Ajah on Sept. 12, where two AK47 rifles were snatched from policemen.
“The robbers led SARS detectives to a bush in Ogbomo area where the two rifles buried in the swamp were recovered,” he said.
Aderanti said that one of the arrested suspects was a receiver, who assisted the gang in the sale of the stolen items.
The CP said that efforts were still on to effect the arrest of other fleeing members of the gang.
He implored residents to be vigilant and security conscious, and provide the command with information that could assist in curbing criminal activities.
Aderanti reiterated the commitment of the command to ensure that crime and criminality were reduced to the barest minimum in the state. (NAN)
