Lafia – Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Alhaji Lawal Shehu-Batsari, has advised on Nigerian journalists to be objective, honest and unbiased in their reportage.
Shehu-Batsari gave the advice while receiving officials of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in his office in Lafia on Friday.
He noted that journalists were the mirror of the society and could make or mar any society.
“For Nigerians to be well informed there is the need for journalists to verify, investigate properly and balance their stories before publication so as not to mislead the public,’’ he said.
He maintained that journalists have great roles to play in the socio economic development of the country.
Shehu-Batsari assured that the command would continue to synergise with the union to reduce the level of insecurity in the state.
He said that there was a need for the command to collaborate with union to achieve a crime free society.
The commissioner maintained that security was every one’s business, urging the public to always support journalists with useful information that can lead to the arrest of people with questionable characters.
Earlier, Mr Dan Yakubu, the state chairman of NUJ said the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing synergy between union and the command.
He commended the police for their efforts in safeguarding the lives and property of the citizens of the state and charged them to do more. (NAN)
