Awka – The police in Anambra have confirmed the death of two pupils killed by an overhead water tank which fell into a school classroom at Nkpor-Agu near Onitsha, Anambra.
The command`s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident in a statement in Awka on Wednesday, said two other pupils sustained injuries during the incident.
“On Feb. 5, at about 11:15 a.m., an overhead tank filled with water, fell into a classroom of Royal Kings Foundation Nursery and Primary School, Nkpor-Agu in Idemili North Local Government Area.
“On arrival, it was discovered that the overhead tank of about 800 gallons capacity fell from its stand in a neighbouring house adjacent the school on the roof directly into the classroom.
“Four children sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to Idemili Hospital, Nkpor for medical attention,” he said.
The spokesman said two of the children namely, Wisdom Ezewudo (3) and a female of about two years, whose identity was yet to be ascertained, were confirmed dead on arrival at hospital.
He said 19-month-old Chimelumeze Obelenwa and 22-month-old Anthony Kosisochukwu were responding to treatment.
Mohammed said that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr John Abang, who commiserated with parents of the victims, had ordered further investigation into the incident.
